Recover Dead Skybox Flash Using Serial RS232 Null modem Cable

there is only one place the rs232 null cable can fit on the back of the pc as the others are all female ports.i tried three different upgrade tools with four different f/w.the skybox is geniune as it has a gold genuine sticker on the f5s box.Just tried it up my mams on her pc and still get the same results.Nice way to spend a friday night lol.

reaper you were right i tried an older version from skybox cc and its only gone and bloody worked....first time for me im made up now...plus i know now that you can do it using an rs232 null cable with a usb converter on the end using a lap top....im sure i have read somewhere that you couldnt do it...anyway thanks mate...kydavies..keep at it mate you will do it in the end...its took me about 5 days now:)

i have tried everything every method different pc even different power but still nothing im well and truely stumped on my next move.

i seen the diagram on the 1st page mate yes but how do i check the wiring in a cable that's been factory formed.i bought a £20 maplin rs232 null cable.i was gonna get a standard rs232 until i realized that there is a difference between a standard rs232 and a null rs232,is that what you mean mate. the link below is of the cable i bought.thanks for the reply boys i know you don't have to much appreciated.

Maplin Serial RS232 Null Modem Cable 3m | Maplin

I don't know how you could check it pal. Was there a diagram in the box with if when you bought it? I bought mine off e bay for 5er plus a rs232to USB adapter as mine doesnt have a rs232 port. Mine works fine. Check the diagram at the top of this thread . That's all I can say right now. Hope u get it sorted pal

yeah will do mate, just cant understand bought three boxes at the same time and its only been the one box playing up.bought them from amazon for 50 quid each so cant be a clone.

When i plug the skybox back in after step 1 on EROM i still got a faint standby light and No 8, Its seems like a lack of power but tried two identical plugs and one was definitely working.

kydavies...that cable sounds OK to me, but £20 for a null modem cable...ouch! That's half the cost of a new box! If you know someone with a multimeter you could double-check that pin2-3, 3-2, & 5-5, but as long as Maplin actually supplied you with the one you linked to, then it should work.

It sounds like you are doing everything right.

I have flashed loads of boxes by RS232, but I have 3 or 4 here that simply refuse to flash (one of them with the faint 8). Sometimes the components do fail in these boxes, so reflashing won't help.

Do you still have access to the other 2 boxes? If so you could try connecting one up & doing a Data dump (instead of upgrade) to test your lead & setup.

Set everything up as you would do if you wanted to flash the box, but when you run Erom Update, select "Data dump" from the "Operate Mode" pull down menu instead of "upgrade". Click on "Browse" & select where you want to save the file & give it a name.

If your setup & cable are working as they should be, then the firmware from the box should start to download to your pc. Once you can see that it's downloading you can cancel it if you want, as it might take a while.

Doing a Data dump ensures that you don't change anything on the working box.

Im at my wits end with this method tried loads of different fw and all the methods listed.Everything seems to be fine downloads flashes etc but then still only loads to 093 then flashes then I get the error code e0001 again.Got my cable from amazon but not entirley sure its fully wired as someone in comments said its not.could this be causing my box not to correctly receive the data.Im actually about to go mad and get the hammer out ahhhhhh

Tried for over 7 hours to recover my box.still no luck.tried every fw on this site.i tried the st.abs recovery file as well.can someone please confirm i go to upgrade and not dump when putting on the st.abs file.also why does everything seem to download and flash fine, yet box still loads to 093 then gets the E001 error code ??.im using a cloned skybox f3 and as ive set used all fw from all 3 sites and still nothing.Ive ordered up a new rs 52 cable to see if its that.any help would be greatly appreciated before i just send box to be fixed :(

If your setup actually goes through the motions of flashing your box, then your cable must be OK. It doesn't have to be fully wired. As long as pin 2-3, 3-2, & 5-5, then it will work. Upgrade is the correct setting. What is st.abs?

If you are absolutely sure that your box is a clone, then you could try the 3 firmware files I've attached (23/01/13, 27/03/13, & 01/05/13). I have just tried them on my clone F3 & they all work OK.

St.abs is the file on page 4 of this post by wommble or something like that.
I think my cable might not have those wired configurations as some guy complained in comments about it.i will try these files you have sent and if these dont work then wait on another cable i know is wired correctly.im so near yet seem so far.while its flashing and downloading to i need the usb with the firmware in box or is this irrelevant.Darkbydesign

There should be nothing attached to box when flashing except the box power supply and the null modem cable.
Read your last post in the F3/F5 area and there you will find the path to the firmware.
Read a bit more carefully about flashing method as I think you may have the wrong end of the stick.

Im pretty sure i am nearly there m8 as it downloads and flashes to 100% then box restarts but only goes to the dreaded 093 then E0001 code follows.
Il try these firmwares yous guys have sent and then if these fail im thinking the cable is my problem.ive got another one coming that i know is correct.wish me luck

Ahh...you mean SB.abs. That file is for genuine F3 boxes only. I get a mismatch error if I try to flash that file by USB on my clone.

I'm sure your current cable is fine. The box only uses the 3 pins I mentioned earlier (tx, rx, & ground). If any of them were not connected, or connected wrongly, then the EROM upgrade software wouldn't say "Done" when you switch it on. Of course, there's no harm in trying another cable & you will always have a spare then.

As the reaper says, all you need is the null-modem cable & the power cable while flashing. Remove anything else, including USB sticks.
