Recover Dead Skybox Flash Using Serial RS232 Null modem Cable

I had exactly the same problem and same box and was convinced my box was a clone,I even downloaded firmware from the skybox site which my computer wouldnt recognise.i downloaded other firmware from the site that my computer recognised and by luck and a bit of messing about(read my earlier post)it worked.sorry its not very technical.stick with it .

Hi guys,
Im pulling my hair out with this one.
Ive tried to flash my frozen f5s skybox. The message i get is "wrong file", so im guessing i have a clone box yes?
I have downloaded the firmware for the clonebox, but my pc doesnt recognise what to open it with. Any help what i need to download here to read the file?

Any help appreciated, lost without the tv.

Mark

If the firmware you have downloaded is .zip or .rar, then you need to use a program to uncompress it first. There are many free programs that can do this. I use a free program called IZArc.

Once it's uncompressed, your pc still won't recognise it. You just point the EromUpgrade tool to it using the File "browse" button.

As I had said before. Wrong file message can sometimes be fixed by going back a few firmware versions. Don't download latest try one from early 2013.

Thanks for the replies and help.
I've downloaded all the versions i can find of f5s firmwares, i have 14 on the desktop now, but only 3 can be opened by my pc. By opened i mean the ones that can are a folder icon and i can go into them and select the eromupgrade file to run, the ones that cant display as a page with a screenshot on displaying 3 icons. if i select them it just asks what i want to open with, i cant get into the file to try to run it.
All have been extracted through winzip.

Any thoughts?

Thanks again

As I said in my previous post, your pc won't recognise firmware files. There isn't a program that will run them. They should have an extension of .abs when they have been uncompressed. When you run EromUpgrade, choose one of these files when you click on the File browse button.

trying to flash keep getting wrong file

hi guys downloaded the erom 8m flash for my f5 am following the instructions and keep getting wrong file pls help ive tried many things still same wron file

I kept getting wrong file error at first because I was selecting the eromclient.abs file as per the screenshot in post 1... So I realised when u click browse you need to select the actual firmware file and not the eromclient file.

Managed to get my F5 back on line. The box was dead only a very faint red LED on power on. Used the original PVR800 program and the *.abs file that I had after I had backed up the F5 a couple of months back. The PVR800 program kept saying file error. Cured this by downloading the flash program that was for the clone F5 that was in one of the earlier posts. Connected up as per post 1 pointed at the *.abs file backup and it all worked liked a dream. One F5 back on line - perfect. Thanks guys for all the help. By the way I used a USB to serial adapter on the Laptop with a null modem cable with no problems.
It also highlights that when you have a working Skybox you should take a backup and keep it safe - I can't emphasise how important this is.

...By the way I used a USB to serial adapter on the Laptop with a null modem cable with no problems...

Could you let us know the actual adapter you used & which operating system you use on the laptop.

It may help others that don't have a pc with a serial port.

Sure. I should have done this before. It was a Plugable USB to RS232 DB9 Serial Adapter (Prolific PL2303HX Rev D Chipset) (http://www.amazon.co.uk/Plugable-Ad...269&sr=8-1&keywords=plugable+USB+to+RS232+DB9 please remove if this is not allowed) although mine was cheaper than this as it was refurbished. OS is Windows 8.1. The NULL modem RS232 cable is also required which I got from ebay.
The adapter comes with the driver disk which you install first and then plug in the adapter to the USB port. The Laptop picked it up right away. Look in System to see which COM port it was on and that's it
