Recover Dead Skybox Flash Using Serial RS232 Null modem Cable

thanks for your response Kremman, i purchased the following cable that states this is what its used for ...

RS232 Serial Null Modem Cable DB9 Female to DB9F RS | eBay
(apologies you have to copy and paste the link)

i am not sure i am exploring the idea of getting usb to rs232 and maybe using win xp os and see how it goes ...

the process seems simple to me as high lighted quite few times i think its just trying to get the correct setup and see that works...

Yep. That's the right cable.

A lot of members don't have success with USB to serial converters. If you could beg, steal or borrow an older machine with built-in RS232, then that will be your best option.

Thanks Kremmen for your reply.

I have successfully got the f3 working eventually with the correct setup :)

The following setup i have that works for me is as follows:

Windows 8.1 64-bit
no built in com ports on the motherboard

Bought from eBay 'RS232 null modem cable' (Special thanks to Kremman to confirm this is the correct cable)
Also bought Plugable USB to RS-232 DB9 Serial Adapter (Prolific PL230HX Rev D Chipset) from Amazon.uk (Also thanks to Zabarich on what cable to use)
(windows just detected the drivers for Plugable USB to RS-232 DB9 Serial Adapter and assigned a com port number to it)

Then just followed the instructions from the 1st page and it was successful :)

.abs file downloaded from skybox.cc
program 'erom_upgrade_8Mflash' downloaded from here

The whole thing took 10 mins with the correct setup.

just for further information:
i tried pci-e rs232 com card from ebay it did state works for this kind of stuff but it did NOT work for me, maybe issue with the operating system i don't know...
other things i was going to try was different OS like win XP, another null modem cable, different com card or do it on com port that is on main board....

Anyways thanks everyone for the help to put me in the correct direction.

if you need more info let me know i will try my best to help

After updating my channels I also have this issue, it loads right upto 100 then just starts again. How do I know if my box is genuine so I know which file to download

Thanks

long as you got the correct setup to flash your box you shouldn't have any problems updating it... i had the stb error i fixed it by getting another cable from pc to null modem cable via USB (see my previous posts)
