Apple TV

Now that Apple have now allowed VPNs on their Apple TVs and also allowed a Stremio alternative (Vidi) on their App Store.. is the Apple TV now a good choice for you?

Before the “just get a shield” comments come in, I already have an Apple TV 4K, Z11 Pro Max and Z Mini - this is purely to gauge where people think it’s at and if they consider it a viable option now?

I have not owned any of the devices you have mentioned so can’t comment on them.
But I personally prefer android devices for media because you have much more freedom with the OS compared to iOS.
I also preferred AOSP compared the ATV for a similar reason but that is down to the all the apps I use work just as well without the need to use ATV which is not as open as AOSP.

I do prefer Apple phones though.

I know it’s pricy but I really find iptvx an amazing client.

It has great meta data for the vods. From top charts to trailers and more.

Auto provide subs.

The ux is second to none.

VPN works fine for me.

Happy to share more if ur interested.

I’ve used IPTVX and didn’t get on with it. Seemed unrealiable. However I am used to MyTVOnline3 and there’s nothing even close on Apple TV unfortunately. UHF has been the most reliable for me.

I’m deep in the Apple ecosystem and would like to utilise the ATV as my main box but it’s the IPTV apps that let it down for me at the moment.

I have Apple TV 4Ks here and they work well with all the subs we have here ...for iptv I got the Snappier IPTV app, give it a try.

I’ve tried that before as well. To be fair, Snappier is one of the best ones. Might revisit this one

Yeah, they have a good discord channel too, it works well for my use... Then the AppleTVs themselves nicely keep a single home page on all TVs, have all the apps we need including Disney, Netflix, etc... Got the Discovery sub during the olympics, no probs... We have the Fitness+ to use with the watches, and the kids enjoy gaming with Apple Arcade... The VPN was a nice addition, it works but I don't have it running all the time, still nice to know is there if ever needed... when it goes to sleep, it shows a selections of photos from a shared album... You probably know all this - it has grown more useful through the years but is best when you are deep in the apple ecosystem...

I got in that one early, great UI and I paid for the lifetime + use only only on appletv price. That was great but then they introduced subscriptions which is fair enough... but my app ended up in this limbo where I had access to all features I needed but not to all features available. My UI got a bit cluttered with sections I was not able to access and I was not able to remove those from the ui  In any case, I moved on to other apps and found snappy and then the new snappier is working well...

I got both the latest Apple TV and shield....Apple tv has moved in the right direction allowing vpns and vidi now where u can use RD on an Apple device but still a has some way to go...IPTV apps are fine and UHF or Snappier would be my choice...Vidi still needs work and dev is doing that so fingers crossed with Trakt and other updates gets to stremio level...but for now I still prefer the shield as my main device. If your just a legit worldwide app user for sports Apple TV is excellent.

Just checked out uhf looks nice and it is cheaper than IPTVx. I have not experienced the reliability issues you mentioned.

I would say to the original poster give them both a try they both have native UI.

I would argue that Apple TV as an IPTV platform is viable at least for me.

I definitely feel like Apple TV is moving in the right direction. It’s possible to use it as a replacement for other android boxes now with VPN, IPTV and RD capabilities. Just need some more app devs to come forward with their versions of apps.

Are you a shield guy?

I reached my limit with Fire TV earlier this year when they started throwing up the full screen ads and restricted ADB. Fine if they were charging pennies for it but I'd paid £140 for the Fire Cube and was having ads thrown down my throat left right and centre. Switched to the Apple TV 4K and haven't looked back. Really slick, clean and the use of VPNs has now made it my no.1 device. Very easy to install apps officially from other countries too which I prefer to using APKs that require updating every couple of months.

I did own the first gen firestick and used to set them up for people but not keen on Fire tvOS tbh.
The Apple TV doesn’t offer full audio pass through so I wouldn’t own one for that reason alone.
Does Apple TV have much bloatware?

Not really bloatware but you have apps like Facetime, Apple TV+, Photos etc, so if you already own an Apple device you would be used to seeing these preinstalled.
