Guide A guide to the best boxes for IPTV 2021

My Android device lets me choose which colour format I want but I mainly use adaptive so it recognises the correct colour format of the content I am viewing.
I have used it on older SDR movies and some 4k SDR channels.
Looks handy, any chance you list the name of the android device? Would love to order it and try it out!

It’s an Ugoos AM8 but they have a new device out, it’s a SK1 but it’s very similar specs to the AM8 but not seen any reviews on it yet.
I only really use it to stream and it does all that I need it too.

You can’t install official streaming apps as it is running AOSP.
You can install the mobile version but no 4k.
There is a slimbox ATV firmware available but I don’t like ATV so haven’t tried it.

So, having had our son break the screen our Sony TV 😑 I’m in the market for a new TV and potentially IPTV box.

What I liked about Sony was the Google OS and the fact that I could just download TiviMate, etc straight into it. Found it all very convenient for a newbie.

But now I’m wondering - am I better off investing in an Nvidia Shield (pro?) and getting a slightly cheaper OLED (probably LG) as a setup?

I think it would be better if you just get a OLED TV with everything built in & make sure TV is android base because LG has limited apps on there own store. If your going to get a second device it’ll cost more unless you go for a firestick instead of the Nvidia Shield.

Thanks - so better to go for a more expensive Sony TV than a cheaper LG and Nvidia Shield? I have a FireStick and find it buffers quite a bit…

So no buffering on the Sony TV but buffering on the Firestick?
I personally prefer to have a separate device for iptv as they are better equipped to run iptv than a TV.
You might not be that bothered but the Nvidia Shield doesn’t support HDR HLG so if you watch some UHD channels they will only play in SDR.
If you are after some of the official streaming apps Netflix etc then you are limited on what devices you can purchase.
Amazon, Apple TV, Chromecast and Nvidia shield support most of the official streaming apps and UK catch up apps. Shield doesn’t support All 4 catchup app.

OLED LG TVs are expensive too and good there iptv apps I think are decent but not that great, if LG supported (Google play) or (downloader) in future it would be better but i hope LG release something similar where we can download third party apps from, I’m not sure about the Nvidia shield box as don’t have one I just use my apps on OLED LG TV.

LG will never support third party apps.

LG will never support third party apps.
Why won’t they support third party apps? I remember LG used to have Google play not sure why they stopped supporting Google Play and released webOS instead if I knew this I would have bought a different OLED TV brand and not LG.

They have their own operating system not android which is controlled by Google.

I think you would benefit from actually using google to find out some information before you bought or quoted what you know.
I can’t believe you didn’t check what OS LG TV’s ran on if you wanted to run Android apps on them.
LG smart TVS have never used Android OS and they developed Linux based WebOS specifically for their smart TVs.
Which model LG TV did you have the play store on?

Not actually quite sure what you mean, all I’m trying to say is that if LG allowed third party apps would be much better for the customer in my experience referring to iptv. Sony OLED TVs let you download third party apps so I don’t see why LG won’t because LG iptv apps aren’t really all that good. On the old LG smart TV a friend had google play store on their TV.

With Sony OLEDs, when you flick the screen, does it feel like plastic or glass?

Why on earth would LG let people download third party apps they make no money on.

You don’t know what I mean by researching before you buy an item or make a quote that is probably not true.
LG uses WebOS and nobody is writing third-party app for that OS.
Sony don’t allow you to download third party apps from their playstore either.
You can only access official apps from their playstore.
All other Android APK’s apps have to be sideloaded.
I can find no mention of LG ever using Android OS on their smart
TVS either.
Maybe your friend can prove me wrong.
The reason I don’t run iptv apps on my LG tv is because none of them are as good as Tivimate imo.
I haven’t experienced running IPTV on a Sony TV so don’t know how well it runs compared to a dedicated device.
But I have a feeling it’s not as good but might run well on higher end Sony TVS as they will have better processors than cheaper Sony models.

From google play store you can install downloader that will let you download third party apps on Sony.
Well I did see google play on his LG smart tv unless it was a different TV brand and I thought it was a LG TV and that was about 8 years ago so I can’t confirm now.
So are Sony TVs better than LG TVs because they have better processors?
I know you can use downloader to sideload third party apps on Sony TVs or TVs running Android OS but you can’t install them from their official playstore is what I meant.
It must have been a TV brand running Android OS but I very much doubt it was an LG TV.
Sony are regarded as producing TVs that have the best picture processing by industry experts.
That’s probably due to the fact that they also specialise in making monitors for the film industry.
But their flagship TVS are usually more expensive than their main rivals LG and Samsung.
The reason I don’t buy Sony TVs because of the extra premium you pay.

So are Sony first TVs on the list to buy?

And about for gaming on Sony TVs?

Sony TVs are a premium brand but doesn’t make all their TVS great and they range for a reason from cheap to expensive.
You get what you pay for.
I don’t game anymore so can’t help you with that.
You will have to look at reviews on specific models to find out.
