STRIKE: AN UNCIVIL WAR 9/10

The Miners' Strike of 1984/85 was the most divisive, violent industrial dispute Britain has ever witnessed. With personal testimony, formerly hidden government documents and a treasure trove of previously unseen archive, STRIKE: AN UNCIVIL WAR tells the brutal and emotional account of that year, and reveals the full story of the infamous Battle of Orgreave.

To be fair, we watched it in the cinema, can't stomach CAM versions either. Definitely getting a rewatch as soon as a good version comes up.

Bit of a tale here

so back in 1984/85ish at the height of the strike a m8 of mine and his dad uncle friends were all miners. So my m8 use to own a VW camper van and his Dad Uncle etc about 10 of them all jumped in it to head for the colliery to join the picket line. When they got there there was a large mesh gate leading to the pit and the workers car park on the other side but the colliery had closed it and everyone was outside of the fence protesting.

At the same time a few "scabs" had been randomly breaking the line been hidden in vans. So my m8 and his entourage roll up for their first day of protest,. they drive towards the gates in this VW camper all in the back thinking they'd park up on the car park but its on the other side of the closed gate. The next thing there's about 300-400 miners come charging towards his camper chanting top note SCABS ! SCABS ! SCABS ! . Their all in the van go ing NO NO NO NO WERE WITH YOU !! but no ones listening and there's mass heated commotion going on guys punching the windows with tempers running sky high and Police trying to intervene.

The next thing they can all feel the van been rocked left right left right there and there all screaming "Were with you !!" but no one can hear them while all the time its getting more and more swayed left to right till eventually the van was tipped over. Not that, there was a drainage gully down an embankment for flooding about 12ft down and the van went tumbling down. They'd water food brew stuff all in the van my m8 said it rolled about 4-5 times down this embankment and they were like pinball balls bumper to bumper covered in flying food etc.

Eventally they got out and the protesters realised but my m8's van was written off. Still tickles me to this day all at the van window banging NO NO NO next thing woooooosh !! down the hill

I'd p"ss myself if that's anywere on tv news coverage

Horizon 6/10

I saw "Horizon" yesterday and I have to say, I'm a bit disappointed. I was really looking forward to it. But somehow the film didn't really grab me.
Sure, the landscape shots are really beautiful and there are a few exciting action scenes. But overall, the story feels totally fragmented. You're constantly jumping between different characters without really building a connection to any of them.
Costner himself only appears late in the film and some supporting characters are really poorly acted. This Marigold character in particular got on my nerves.
The ending then came somehow suddenly and felt unfinished. Of course, there are supposed to be more parts coming, but I still would have wished for a more rounded conclusion.
Bottom line: Visually great, but disappointing in terms of story. I'll probably still watch Part 2 - you never know. But the big excitement is gone for now.

I make mountains out of mashed potatoes every week, I assumed everyone did. My car technology hasn't moved on much since 1977, when I first got it, dogs used to chase me every time I drove it down a cobbled street.

Lol not sure how to reply to that can remember as a young boy my jack Russell chaseing people on motorbikes he was crazy and when the letter box's was lower he would use his 👃 to knock my grandparents door then run off very clever

When you see sixties footage of hillman imps and Morris Oxfords going down old cobbled streets there was always at least one dog, sometimes three or four chasing it.

When I was a kid, there were gangs of dogs roaming the streets, you never see a dog on its own nowadays, back then they were everywhere like shit in a field, you used to see them on football and rugby pitches during live tv games...'oh it seems there's a dog on the field, the stewards are chasing it, yes they've got it, we'll resume this Manchester Derby as soon as the referee decides, oh hang on there's another dog, this ones an alsation, this may take a bit longer'

Fantastic.

In today's sterilised, made for television world who can honestly say they would be unhappy if during a live televised Man City V Real Madrid champions league match, a medium sized rottweiler made its way onto the pitch and curled one off in the penalty box?

I would pay money to see that.

And it would make more headlines than anything any of the players did.
Unless they copied him.

Crazy can remember in my teens always stepping in dog poo when got new trainers piss you off not done that in 20 years maybe less dogs or people picking it up
