Openwebif /Terminal
Paste grogbuild command line in and follow instructions
Choose default skin when it asks

Are you using hdd or usb?
I know you've done all that but you picked the wrong skin and it won't work, you have to start again.

i know that mate the trouble is the box crashes instantly which seems to be stopping any sort of connection via putty or terminal.i've got a portable hard drive plugged in

It could be the hdd causing this
Remove it and use a usb in the back
See if it boots up
