Windows 11 Windows 10 to windows 11 ?

Hi All, got a bit of a problem, think I have.... I have a dell inspiron with an i5, 3rd gen processor, with Microsoft not supporting Windows 10 after October '25 and me wanting to switch to windows 11 Microsoft PC health check app has told me that my PC ain't up to the switch due to processor not "on their list" of processors able to accommodate windows 11, this is where my problem lies, can I swap out my i5 3rd gen for a ... i5 8th gen let's say or will I have to bite the bullet and buy a new PC?, hope this makes sense and if so thanks to all who read this .
 
You are not alone but it is not as simple as upgrading the CPU. Win 11 need a module called TPM 2.0. I have a dell xps 8700 Jul 2014 32gb ram and runs like a dream but no TPM module. MS are going to offer extended support for a few years and a company in Europe are going to offer indefenite support. I'm not going to update just yet.

As far as I know upgrading the processor isn't easily done but like you I have an Inspiron 13 5378 with the i5 processor that's not on the list. About a month ago I upgraded it to Windows 11 using the Windows 11 ISO downloaded from Microsoft I then used a program called Rufus to alter it to ignore the requirement check. There are many YouTube videos on upgrading and the methods change all the time so do check the latest videos.

You will also have to change the Bios to UEFI Mode and have TPM 2.0 and Secure Boot enabled and change the boot order to boot from USB

I had problems with no sound once 11 was up and running but after trying various drivers somehow that's now ok and in device manager I had two devices without drivers but after googling the codes I found that one was intel integrated sensor hub and the other intel virtual buttons driver which were both on the dell support site.

I did the upgrade first which gives you a week or so to go back to Windows 10 but later decided to do a clean install.

It's now running well and it's noticeably quicker than Windows 10,

I bought a dongle on eBay for £10 and it did the upgrade pretty quick!
By passing the requirements, you get warnings about not getting updates but it's updated all mine
It uses your present license so window 10 pro to 11 pro Hp i5 laptop.
Sent it to my son afterwards and he updated his as well
 
There is also Linux OS as an alternative. It's free and doesn't have any TPM hardware requirements. It will run a LOT better than Windows on aging hardware.
There are the big distros (Ubuntu, Debian, etc), but I think the ones listed above are best for new users.

Might be an idea to install 10 then get the thumb drive, because it uses the 10 licence! Not sure if it will recognise the 7 licence.
It was a good drive because I noticed it would install from 32 bit as well as 64.
Most of them were just 64 when browsing!
I checked his feedback and nobody has had a problem with it.
How are you bud?
I don't come on the site so much now but nice to notice some old members still here
