Its a 16GB Sandisk. I managed to get it to start downloading to the box at the opening HDMI page once a fresh openatv was installed, but still no joy by the end, with the same error messages.

You don't install openatv6.4 yourself, it does it itself when you run the command line.
Have you set a password with the remote? Menu, setup, system, network password setup.

Openwebif, log in with password and paste in the command line, which command line are you trying to use?

Tried Putty, it actually went a little further, but then crashed.

that's not crashed, that is the box disconnecting while/after flashing. totally normal

He must have flashed a different partition to the one he's using if the box didn't reboot.
Just needs to restart to the new partition in multiboot menu.
