T-Mobile Starlink

T-Mobile and SpaceX have teamed up to offer T-Mobile Starlink, a service that connects your existing smartphone directly to Starlink satellites. This aims to eliminate dead zones by providing coverage in areas without traditional cell service. The beta program is currently open and free for many T-Mobile customers.

Has anyone here signed up for the beta? I'm excited to test the service and see how well it works in a variety of environments, such as in a vehicle or in a wooded area.

this t-mobile starlink thing sounds wild anyone tried the beta yet curious how it holds up in dead zones like on the road or out in the woods legit game changer if it works

haha fair point mate but imagine it actually works perfectly on a motorway or out camping in the middle of nowhere would be a game changer reckon they’ve tested it properly for stuff like that?

They've said it'll support only SMS at first, slowly expanding to offer more services (e.g. voice, data) as capacity increases. From what I read, it'll require a clear view of the sky, but it's not obvious exactly what that means. This is why I'm curious about wooded areas. Starlink internet service can struggle when trees obstruct a fairly wide view of the sky.

I always thought it was Freeway in the US, and the Highway was from Dick Turpins times? Lol

I'll be sure to test it on both freeways and highways. Before long, it should be available globally. I'll need to rely on one of you to test it on a motorway and report your findings.

Maybe a good feature in the larger countries but in places like the UK dead signal areas aren't that big.

I know my phone the pixel 9 pro supports satellite SOS calls but it's something I hope I'll never need.

Jeff Geerling was an early adopter of Starlink to test it out about 3 years ago. He has regularly updated his YouTube channel with videos about it. It works, but like every product Elon hypes up, it doesn't quite live up to the expectations based on what Elon promotes (just like autonomous driving for Tesla). Over promise and under deliver - it's what Musk does best.

I suppose you have to tell a few lies along the way to become the richest human on earth.
Well unless Elon is really an alien.

That's a good point; in smaller countries with almost complete coverage, this won't be as big of a deal in day-to-day life. I spend a significant amount of time in cellular dead zones, so it feels like this kind of tech is perfect for me.

Another aspect is how it can deliver emergency alerts to any phone even in the case of a disaster that disables cellular networks, like happened in the aftermath of hurricanes last year in the southeastern US.

i've never looked into satellite-to-mobile as a backup option, but I have another method going on, to cover times where there is a potential loss of mobile service

so, there are x4 networks in the uk, and i utilise all of them. for around £8 a month

I have three network, o2, and ee, all on esims, and vodafone on a physical sim (i keep the physical sim on a keyring holder thing that also holds the sim insert tool)

so, some sims have become really cheap now (e.g. lebara currently offer 50gb at 42p per month for first 8 months), so here is what I have:
  • i have smarty esim, (piggybacks 3 network) and the deal is £5/month/40gb/exit anytime
  • spusu esim (piggybacks ee) £2.90/month/1gb/exit anytime
  • sky esim (piggybacks o2) £0.00/month/100mb (but keeps rolling over and the rollover is currently over 2gb)/ tied in to 36 months from when i used sky to sign up to an iphone 15
  • lebara physical sim (piggybacks vodafone) £0.42/month/50gb/exit anytime
you can have x2 sims active at any time, I usually have smarty (my main number) and spusu active, and as im driving around you can see on apple carplay the signal bars on the top row and you can see there are times where x1 network has a very low signal or nothing, and the other network is at full strength. my spotify never fails while driving because when the first sim goes low signal the 2nd sim will provide the signal.

another example was that i was on a uk holiday back in august, glamping haha, and the networks 3, ee, o2 were all too low on the signal but the voda sim came to the rescue with full 5g
