Static VPN?

Morning all,

With ISPs throttling and blocking IPs of IPTV streaming servers etc, people go down the VPN route. I hear that the ISPs are also blocking VPNs?

I suppose it's easy for them to find out the IP ranges that the VPN's are using?

I notice that some offer a static VPN which should be unique to you?

Would that slip that net or would it just be a part of the same range and blocked along with the public ones?
:)

I need to start getting more clued up on VPNs, currently on Vodafone broadband and have noticed more so on the champions league nights throttling, as soon as I turn my VPN on (cyber ghost region netherlands) its fine, however reading that ISPs can detect VPNS I need to understand more about VPNs and purchase when renewal time comes up a VPN that isn't based on the best cashback offer.

It’s a smart move to start learning more about VPNs, especially if you're noticing throttling during key events like Champions League nights. A good VPN not only hides your activity but also ensures consistent speeds. Look for one with strong encryption, a no-logs policy, and servers optimized for streaming. Providers like NordVPN, ExpressVPN, or Surfshark are popular for reliability. If you're worried about detection, some VPNs offer stealth modes to bypass ISP restrictions. Let me know if you need any specific recommendations!

I've noticed that some UK VPN IP's are being blocked by my ISP during live football events (usually Sky live matches)
Solution = switch to using a VPN location in another country (France, Germany, etc)

ISP's cannot permanently block VPN IPs. I suspect they will have evidence that UK VPN IP's are being used to access their copyright content and will be legally allowed to block during these live events. Once the matches finish you can almost always turn off VPN and it's working as expected. IMO this is being driven by Sky/Premier League - think of the revenue they are missing because of this. They have to do what they can to fight it.

Just think of the poor corporations and millionaire footballers missing out on this money. It's really sad. Times are just as tough for them as the general public :tearsofjoy:

Ah yes, the real victims here—the multimillionaires and corporations struggling to make ends meet. Truly a modern-day tragedy. 😅

Change your dns and as mentioned use a VPN server not located in the UK.
But your ISP can still see the traffic volume to the VPN ip addresses.
I haven’t tried a static ip address from a VPN service so can’t comment.

All the static will do is that the ip address will be a designated one and not change everytime you connect to the vpn.
ISP don't have the powers to block vpn usage whether uk or Germany India ect most think it's there ISP blocking that vpn but most of the times it's the vpn server struggling with demand

Could they unofficially block them discreetly? :)

It’s proving that they are throttling it intentionally.
They would also use the excuse that it’s down to your VPN server.
They all say they don't but you can tell they do then there usual, excuse is a fault on your line and by miricle your speeds pick back up lol

The best advice I can probably give around VPNs is to try the one that best works for your use case. So many good deals out there right now on VPNs (Nord, Surfshark, IPVanish and more) because of the holidays that it's definitely worth it to grab one or even two if you really need them. I always suggest starting close to your home servers for location and then moving out from there when choosing location. I find different VPN locations definitely help at different times. Switching to a location in a different country though can definitely alleviate a lot of the issues mentioned above!

Surely ISP's can't start blocking anyone on a VPN just incase some folk are watching Utd or Spurs lose again. Millions use VPN's as protection, Im not sure that can be true. But that p*sses me off with some apps you cant log in with a VPN, so what's the fookin point ??

It's why I use split tunneling.... but I agree. It's beyond frustrating that some apps don't let you even use a VPN with their services. I understand the reasoning with geo-locking and that side of it.... but it's super frustrating none the less.

The problem now is more people are using VPN’s to watch geo locked content or other types of streaming, putting a bigger load on VPN servers at certain times.
The government, the companies and the ISP’s know this.
I could definitely see iSP’s throttling VPN IP addresses at certain times when they know people are accessing certain streams if asked to do so by a governing body.

Agreed 100% with this. I’ve worried about that too. Hopefully the big VPN providers can continuously rotate IP addresses to circumvent that. But the big thing I worry about is outside of this space…. But the legitimate needs for VPNs. It’s tough to throttle all VPN traffic when people need it for legit reasons such as work etc.

Obviously they wouldn’t target a place of business but someone working from home could be inadvertently affected.
