I havent backedup any UMD's for the PSP before, been downloading them straight off the net. lol

But i'll look up or write up a guide for yah. (y)

done with software 3.8, i might try to update to the latest software, 5.50 GEN-D, i think it is as easy as putting the new software on the root of the card, putting the installer in E:PSP/GAME/UPDATE then exiting out, then running installer, does this sound about right?

I've done the upgrade myself too, but cant quite re-call, let me go through my saved folders, the worst case scenario of not doing it right would be, upgrading it to the Official firmware again. lol

Update: I've just done a quick google search for the 5.50 GEN-D, and came across this:
