Yes, i will agree with the charging suggestion.
I had to try multiple times myself, i dont know why, but it just refused to work, try changing the default trigger button from "L" to something else. Then ofcourse reformatting the memory stick and starting all over again, one of these tweaks will get your memory stick running within the next several attempts you may have to make.
Another thing, have you bought the memory stick from a reliable supplier?
Back when i was downgrading my PSP, i had ended up buying a fake memory stick on eBay, thinking i had hit a bargain with the price but later found it was a fake, as there "magicgate" text wasnt showing in the memory stick info on the PSP's interface.
Also, some would recommend using a pro-duo memory stick from 256MB to 2GB. I personally didnt find this a problem, it worked fine with my 4GB pro duo memory stick that I had later purchased from the store.
