Google TV streamer 4K.

The new chromecast doesn't fare well in speed tests,it's the same chip as the 2nd gen fire stick 4k.
The gen 3 Fire Cube seems the best bet but the bloat and adverts with them is an issue.

2024 Google TV Streamer Benchmark Scores — Compared to all Onn, Shield TV, Chromecast, Fire TV, and more streaming devices
They are ok for streaming iptv and you don’t really need a powerful device for that task.
If you are after full codec support and full audio pass though they have their limitations.

I currently have a Nvidia Shield, which is only utilised for IPTV & Streamio

I keep reading on other sites HDR is not supported on the shield, I don't properly understand this point especially when my TV will play HDR via the shield

I have been thinking of selling the shield and getting a Google 4K, one of the main reasons is I have now TV Sky Sports, and the Shield does not support Sky Sports UHD via the app

Can anyone explain to a novice which bit with the Shield I am missing out? I love the shield, but if I can get a Google 4K which will play my Now TV Sky Sports in glorious UHD, then I would be tempted to switch

Thanks

Shield doesn’t support HDR(HLG) but sky recently stopped using HLG so you should be ok now but any other official provider that use HLG the content will just play in 4k.
I personally don’t own a shield but wouldn’t get rid of it because of the reason that you posted.
HLG is only used for some live broadcast and not used for movie and TV VOD.
You also need ultra boost on NOW TV to view channels in ultra HD.
Do you have ultra boost on Now TV?

Thanks for your reply - yes I do have ultra boost, we split it 3 ways, currently the only one os us that can utilise it is via an OLED LG TV, although the HD channels are 25FPS only which looks awful. I tried it out on my firestick which I have in another room on a non 4K tv just to see what it looked like, but my main streaming device is my Shield, I also have a BT TV pro box which I replaced my Sky Q box, on the BT forums it seems like this may / may not be supported going forward.

I'm guessing then for steamio, I won't be missing out format wise by using the shield?

So when you view Now tv UHD channels using your shield your TV doesn’t switch into HDR mode?
If that is the case then maybe Now TV are using HLG but I would find that strange because Sky use HDR now.
When viewing HDR content using Stremio on your shield does your TV switches into HDR mode?

I have the latest firestick 4k max, and think it's as good as the fire tv cube. Think mines 3rd gen but could be second, but them benchmarks put it the other way, will check... Paul.

I had a bad experience with 4K Max. Could just be me. But I switched to Chromecast and have had no issues since.

Sky Sports via Now tv isn't supported on the shield - my 1st generation 4K firestick is

As for streamio, yes that does switch to HDR content permitting, as it does via Sky Sports & TNT UHD channels on my IPTV provider

I see what you mean now the with no app support on the Shield but they are 5 year old now and I doubt that they are going to get anymore support in the future but for using it for iptv and VOD apps like Stremio you shouldn’t have any real issues.
You can just use the Firestick for official apps as Amazon are still supporting and giving you updates.

For those thinking of getting a Google TV streamer. I’ve bought one and compared to my Firestick 4K, it is much quicker and the apps load faster and the picture quality seems better too.

Forgetting to mention its (almost) twice the price...................

Agree - I had one briefly and it didn't feel twice the speed of the firestick 4K max - think for the saving I would personally opt for a 4K max on black Friday and if your router is nearby buy the ethernet adapter to go alongside
