Me too, me dad used to grow them, he wouldn't start picking them until we'd had a frost, they didn't taste right until the frost had got at em, sometimes it'd take till week before Christmas before we got a night below zero then we could have proper sprouts.
Prior to that my mum had to use shop bought sprouts, I remember the Sunday dinner conversations.
Dad: Pork was nice, gravy and stuffing were nice, cauli and roasties were nice, sprouts were sh!te.
Mum: well I can pick fresh out the back garden?
Dad: after first frost, you know the rules
