Unrealistic expectations?!

It's absolutely crazy to expect something that even the multi billion dollar networks don't provide. It's downright bonkers to expect to pay $6-$7 a month for it. I don't think the average consumer really understands that what they're looking for is simply not available. They see somebody else ask for it and automatically assume that it's available and they're entitled to it.

Here's a breakdown of why you might not see as many "real" 4K streams for those that don't know.

1. Bandwidth and Cost:
  • 4K Requires More Bandwidth:
4K streams require significantly more bandwidth than HD streams, meaning they need a faster internet connection to deliver a smooth, high-quality experience.

  • Streaming Services Prioritize Cost:
Streaming services have to balance quality with cost, and delivering 4K content at a high bitrate can be expensive due to the increased bandwidth requirements.

  • Lower Bitrates and Compression:
To save on costs and cater to a wider audience, streaming services often use lower bitrates and compression techniques, which can lead to visible artifacts and a loss of detail compared to a true 4K source.

2. Content Availability and Production:
  • Not All Content is Produced in 4K:
Many shows and movies are not originally filmed or mastered in 4K, so streaming services have to rely on upscaling or lower-resolution versions.

  • Sports Broadcasting:
Even in live sports, not all events or cameras are produced in 4K, and some networks may use upscaling techniques to simulate 4K.

  • Limited 4K Content on Streaming Services:
While 4K content is becoming more available, the overall selection is still limited compared to the vast library of HD content.

3. Upscaling and Perception:
  • Upscaling from Lower Resolutions:
Streaming services often upscale lower-resolution content (like 1080p) to 4K, which can make content appear sharper, but it's not the same as a true 4K source.

  • Perception of Quality:
Even with 4K streaming, the quality can vary significantly depending on the source material, bitrate, and compression techniques used.

  • Comparison to Physical Media:
Some people find that 4K streaming doesn't quite match the quality of 4K Blu-rays, which offer higher bitrates and uncompressed video.
