I don't know if things have changed these days but in the 90's some households had a device connected to the TV and phoneline that reported back with what they were watching.
I saw quite a few when I worked for BT.
Didn’t the national grid used work out how many kettles were boiling in the adverts or at the end of programs by the surge. May still do and other algorithms
I can’t see how they can tell how many people are viewing a certain tv channel using a traditional aerial for Freeview.
Do the bbc still have those tv detector vans lol
