Total newbie - openbox v5s info needed

Hi all

as I said in the title I am a total newbie to this, so please be gentle.

I purchased the openbox v5s box, a sky wifi dongle( with antenna) and a 24 month gift. Finally got it all set up with a bit of fffing and blinding.

Now showing all the channels and I organised them in order ( took me ages, moving them all around as they weren't in order)

a couple of questions if anybody can help me out.

1. When I press EPG only some program info shows up ? So I don't know what's on the channel. I been on forums and see that I should get a saving device, but if my wifi dongle is in the USB, what are my options ?

2. Can you record on these boxes ? Like you could with sky ?

3. Do I need to update the openbox from time to time ? If so how do I do this ?

sorry to be long winded, as I said total newbie. Thank you in advance for info given.

1) A feature of these boxes
2)To record connect a hard drive or usb stick to the usb port.
3)Only if things stop working

You could of downloaded a channel list to save all that messing around.

It would be better if you hard wire your box using a ethernet cable to your router wifi dongles don't work to well and cause a lot of picture freazing on scambled channels. I don't want to be the bearer of bad news but your gift will not last 2 years, Take it you got the box of Fleabay.

If you do hard wire the box you could add a hard drive or use a usb stick to record channels, but you can only record the channel the box is set on as its a single tuner box.

Thank you for your reply,
yes I bought it off ebay ! Should I not of done this ?
where else could I of got the. Gift from ? And how long do you think my gift will last for ? I take it the channels will become scrambled again when it runs out.
what do I do then ? Buy another gift ?

Is there a solution for the epg listings as I have no idea what is on the channels ?

my router is positioned in a separate room, so a Ethernet cable would be very messy.
Thanks

Nothing on the Channel list or Gift but, if you need to keep the router and box in separate rooms, try a powerline Ethernet adapter.
Search pcworld dot co dot uk for this one "tp link pa411kit" for £24.99 or one like it.

Or, as TK inserted an advert into the post, click the Powerline link in it for an amazon range.

Ok I have had my box for two weeks now, I recommend a Ethernet connection, so you can record and do channel list updates also download a epg. The best way I have getting a working epg is by downloading the epg in menu>system setup>epg and time settings then selecting xmltv then xmltv settings and downloading the epg and then exiting and then enter same settings and turn back to satellite, keeping USB stick in. You will find a working epg. Keeping the xmltv epg on will show a 1 hour lag! This is a common bug and only fixable by a update I believe and it's not worth it as most eBay boxes are clones and risk the chance of bricking the box. Hope that helps.

Hiya
With regards to updating your EPG so you can see what's on. Go to 'menu' scroll to the right to the third icon (looks like a portrait silhouette) and you will see an option called 'EPG and time setting' - scroll down to highlight that and 'ok'- on the next menu you can change EPG default setting to 'internet (XMLTV)'- then scroll to bottom setting and 'ok'- you will then have a list of countries with United Kingdom at the top- highlight that then press red button on remote- voila! your epg begins updating over the internet- ignore 'auto update' option- it doesn't work very well, it is better to update manually every day.
2) When your 'gift' runs out there are a few online servers that will rent out 'Cclines' so you continue to get your TV and the rental periods are monthly, quarterly etc., just google the search term
3) I highly recommend investing in a long Ethernet cable and putting up with the clutter (or drilling a few holes) this kind of TV really needs the best possible connection you can get, to your router to prevent glitches, buffering and pixelation.

Hope that helps.

Just get some home plugs long ethernet and drilling is not needed.
