Purchase my own router

My ISP router is cheap and the signal does drop out during busy periods when watching live Sport. I asked if I purchased my own router would they allow it to be connected.
They answered and said ''We could set our router like a bridge and then you could connect your own router''.
Can anybody inform me if this would work and would it make any difference to the frequent drop of signal during the live sports?
thanks for any help or advice

I use a mesh system they are very good. But depends what your ISP is doing. If they are throttling your speeds at peak times not much you can do

I agree with Mike, I have a mesh system with the deco mesh system. They were discounted on black friday or prime day or something similar. So if in no rush id wait until then and get a proper mesh system and put the router in modem mode

Yes that should have been first stated could be settings needed disabled on account example if virmin websafe , BT smart setup, Talktalk homesafe , Sly broadband shield and plusnet safeguard.

But on the other hand I do agree mesh system is best thing I invested in first one was tplink deco m4 £80 for twin pack a few years back. Had to upgrade to X20 when when we went to 1GB connection.

I have orbi system 1 part acts as the router then we have 4 satalites as they call them. Turns it all into a wired network where we need it.

Can easily have everybody online with no issues doing what they want

I live in Spain and my provider is a company called Vega Fibra

I have suspected they throttle my speed particularly at the weekend and have complained about this for many years but to no avail. Sadly there is not any realistic option over here as they all use the same lines from their servers to the main internet connections in Madrid, but all the technology when i tried to find out was impossible for me to understand. Lol

If it is Fibre and you have a ONT on the incoming line then just about any router can replace the ISP one.

I highly recommend Asus routers particularly the higher end ones such as the RT-BE92U for this.

Lot of brick internally in my house and even my older Asus gives great signal.

The mesh systems recommended here would also be great.

No its on everything. My iptv is ethernet connected direct to the router and often during sports the signal drops, i also have a surround system (Sonos) and listen to the radio through that and Alexa and often in the middle of a song it will stop broadcasting, then continue so I am pretty sure the signal drops out more than it should, hence wondering if a different router instead of the cheap Huawei one supplied would make more signal more stable

You should try speed testing morning afternoon and evening.
To see if your ISP is throttle your speed at certain times. Do your speed testing with ethernet and Wi-Fi. Ethernet is the most accurate.
The evening and weekends are probably the busiest times on home networks. Schools kids and people at home.
Ethernet will not be affected by a signal drop or interference only Wi-Fi will. Throttling will effect your speed
Try changing your dns on your router if possible to cloudflare or google to see if it improves somewhat.
Are you using a vpn at all as this will impact your speed.

Ferret I keep umming and arring about upgrading my router (TP Link AC2100) basic but it works really well here, as well with the landing TP link booster

However if I were to upgrade what would the benefits be? Even though my set up works well enough, I always like to find ways to make it better (if possible)

I'm on Vodafone 215MB fibre to the premises

with a mesh system you might get better connection speeds around the house, (more consistent). although saying that if your current system gives you this already, you might not notice any difference.

The Asus routers have the spec to run VPN directly on the router with very little loss of speed, also VPN tunneling by device so you can have specific devices going through VPN and others directly through your ISP.

Also find the WIFI range to be very good on them.

How would I change the DNS on my router if it's locked to my isp?

Just google how to change dns on your specific router model and see what google Ai states or other links that provide the information if it is possible.
A vpn will also change your dns if you are using one.
