Problem using splitter on openbox and a humax freesat box

Hi All
Been trying to help a damsel in distress with setting up another box.
She is using a humax freesat box which has two cables and uses it for recording.
Put in an openbox v5s which worked fine but she has to change the sat cable connection to use either box.
Put a splitter in on the incoming sat cable and reconnected to the humax and all works fine.
Connected the openbox and cannot get a signal?
Disconnected the humax totally and with the sat cable direct to the openbox it is fine but as soon as the splitter is connected the signal is lost ?
Hoping that one of the techies on here can shed some light on the problem ?
Thanks

It will not work [shouldn't] with a splitter---you cannot split an incoming signal for 2 boxes.
Buy a quad lnb [cheap on Amazon or the bay. Then you can run a cable direct to the openbox and your original feed etc to the other.

Hi Reaper
It's a community dish so cannot run any new cable ?
The idea was to only have one box in use at any one time to save any conflict and i thought this would work ?
She struggles to change the sat cable between boxes hence the reason for trying the splitter.
If only one box is powered on should it work then ?

There is a connection on the back of the box called loop, put the incoming sat connection to the lnb in on the openbox then take a connection from the loop to the lnb in on the humax leaving the second cable where it is.
Now she should be able to use the openbox then switch off and use the humax.
