Physical stores

Hello,
I'd like to understand something.. Most people I know who have IPTV went to a physical store that does configure IPTV boxes on the side... Then I guess they lock the box to a provider and that's it? The people I know all told me they can only access IPTV from the box and not from their smartphone or laptop, that's not what I'd like. Am I missing something here or is this just a worse alternative than directly contacting a provider?

It's the worse alternative.
I doubt you will be able to contact a provider directly.
You need a reseller, one that doesn't own a STB shop & is willing to sell you a sub/App or sub only

Wouldn't advise buying a device locked to a provider who's advertising them as such. Better to buy your own device, do a bit of research in setting it up, then trial subscriptions.

Agree with this 100%. So many benefits to using your own device. In addition, there are many resources here to help someone find reputable resellers for trials. Anything where you can try before you buy is great because it allows you to get a feel for not only the service, but the person/group you'll be dealing with again in the future. Not to mention with your own device, you have the ability to have multiple providers on the same box as well for backup services and more.

Some people don't want to research stuff like IPTV and configure a streaming device. The OP says that most of the people they know buy a pre-configured device from someone at a physical store. This is the solution that will work for most people. They don't want to have to learn how any of this works, they just want to plug in and go.

The downside is that when you don't understand how something works, then you don't know how to troubleshoot or fix it yourself when it stops working. As others have suggested, I'm pretty sure trading standards/police will come knocking on the door if these illegal streaming devices are being sold from a shop. When (not IF) this happens it means the source for all these IPTV devices has been compromised and it gets shut down. Everyone who bought the IPTV device is now left with a worthless bit of plastic.

Ok thank you for the explanation 😊. Makes things a bit clearer for me now...
(Another drawback of such solution is having to go outside 😱)

The real question is how well does it perform. If it works well, enjoy it while it lasts but If it's bad don't use it and find a better one

Honestly I know 3 persons with different providers, they are all satisfied and it's been a few years. But still, with locked boxes..

If the stores you refer to are not in the UK and somewhere where the 'rules' are relaxed then it might be the norm to source from a store(?).

Devices with the app an sub pre-installed by the seller are widely sold to immigrants, people who want a good range of Eastern European/Arabic channels are more likely to go off a recommendation from a seller who just does the thing they're looking for and does it well.

If you're uk based and looking for the things most iptv customers want, you're better off buying your own device and having the freedom to move subs whoever you want to.
