Laptop fan won't work dell E6510

HI i have a dell E6510 the prob is when the fan is in the laptop it wont work but if i hook it up to a external power supply it works but when i put in back in laptop is spun for about 3 seconds then stopped
does anyone know what the prob. might be i tried speedfan but it doesn't recognize the fan

thnx but the fan doesnt use drivers, but i have updated all the drivers and updated the bios , still the same

Sounds like a dodgy power issue within the laptop if it powers up ok with external assistance.
Try a different power lead inside the laptop if its a possibility.
 
Reset the BIOS to default settings.
Usually F2 on start up. Follow instructions on how to reset it using the options given on the screen. Usually F9 - F10
 
hi again i have already updated the bios to latest version i then reset bios to default but still the same .
BUT i shut it down 10 mins ago and the fan came on at full throttle and took longer to shut down but when powered back up fan didnt work

When you tried it in the external power supply, how long did you leave it running for?
It could be a duff fan, try it again in other PSU and see if it cuts out after a while

hi
i ran it for about 5-10 mins

im wondering if its the main board
i found a clip on utube same prob. and it said to reset bios to defaults and it worked for other ppl on utube but not for me gonna try resetting again like hiteck said

 
I updated bios to see if it would fix the fan problem and it updated to A17 thats the latest version

also i read that if the fan had a prob then the motherboard would turn power of to the fan but reseting bios would fix it but it didnt
 
The fact it's spinning when you fire it up for a couple of second as the board is running through its checks, suggests the fan is ok. Although some fans have a chip inside them that can go wrong. You need to see when the machine is hot if there's power getting to the fan from the board. You can do that with a multimeter. If when hot there is power getting to the fan but the fan is dead, then it's obviously the fan. If there's no power its either your BIOS or motherboard imo.
I'd also try taking the battery out of the motherboard with the lead and battery unplugged and holding down the power button to drain any power left in the board for 30 second. Then try again.

I'd be tempted to also try earlier versions of the BIOS failing all above

The fact it's spinning when you fire it up for a couple of second--it doesnt it did when i shut it down once

thnx can you downgrade the bios ?
the fan didnt work on earlier version of bios thats why i updated it

Also try boot f12 and run diag on the fan if there's an option.

Yes you can downgrade a BIOS.

It may do yes.
It depends if the internal and external power supply are the same strength.
If the external one was slightly more powerful it could fire it up.
A tester would let you find out
