Home entertainment room advice please

Hi everyone,

We moved into our house about 8 years ago, and it came with a full setup of TVs, a Sonos system, and a Bose sound system, as the previous owners were emigrating. It’s been great, but I’ve decided it’s time for some upgrades.

Initially, I was considering an LG Evo TV for our kitchen diner, where we spend most of our time (probably 99% of it!). However, after looking at the cost, I’ve decided instead to dedicate our front living room to a home entertainment/cinema room.

I already have a BenQ TH671ST 1080p projector (bought around 3 years ago for a golf simulator project that didn’t quite work out) and recently picked up an 80-inch projector screen. I also just got a PS5 to use as a media hub and gaming device. The room already has a Bose surround sound system—it’s a bit older, but I’m hoping to take advantage of it for this setup.

Does this sound like a viable plan for movie nights and some gaming? Also, would the PS5 be sufficient for streaming IPTV if I decide to go that route in the future, or would I be better off with a standalone device like an Nvidia Shield or Firestick?

I’d love to hear any advice or recommendations you might have. Thanks in advance!

I can’t speak specifically to the PS5 because I am not a gamer or own one but I know it’s not an Android which is what the Shield and Firestick are. The general consensus is for a cheap device get an Onn box over the Firestick. The Shield is supposed to be the “best” particularly if you are a gamer. Ironically I bought a Shield because I was looking for the “best” even though I don’t game and it is a solid device but in my opinion my Formular box is much better for a stand alone streaming devices. The remote alone makes it worth it for me. Hope this helps.

Thanks for the reply,
I’m not a huge gamer if I’m honest. I just needed a device to run blu ray for the projector and thought having the PS5 with a few games would allow us to make more use of the room.
All I hear is very good things about the shield.

Hopefully I can all this setup and then I can move onto the streaming side of things.
I have heard that the PS5 is quite power hungry when streaming, so might be a case of plugging a standalone straight into the projector. 👍
