Different types of VPN killswitch

Recently tried out Surfshark and was surprised to note that, if the killswitch is enabled, there is no internet connection whatsoever when the VPN isn't connected. I am used to other services where the killswitch only kicks in if there has been a connection error; ie. if I manually disconnect, the connection returns to its default state.

Is this really how Surfshark works? I can see a use case for this way of doing it, but it doesn't suit mine at all.

Hey, yeah, that's actually how Surfshark kill switch work it blocks all internet access whenever the VPN isn’t connected even if you manually disconnect. It’s designed for maximum privacy to make sure no data leaks, but I get how it might not suit your needs. Some other VPNs, like Express or Nord, have a more flexible kill switch that only kicks in during connection errors. Maybe try those if this setup doesn’t work for you

Thanks. Yeah I want the ability to choose when I use the VPN, especially since Surfshark often takes 50% of my download speed.

I always use V.P.N monitor dot handy app to have
Green square flashes at the top right hand side of the t.v screen indicating your v.p.n is connected , red indicates disconnected

You select what apps to route or bypass using the vpn. So if using vpn for iptv you can select route through vpn and if kill switch is selected and the connection drops the kill switch will kick in and stop iptv working which is the point surely?
Other apps not using vpn will work as normal.

I understand the use case, but it's weird to me to have to run the VPN to get a normal connection through the whitelist.

That would be good information but I'm not going to go into the settings every time to force close the app - it's just not convenient.

The information good or not lol is to prove whether the app is still running in the background.
Did you try it to see if the app is still running in the background.
Because if it is this is the only way to force close it or you will have to try another VPN.
Or only enable kill switch when you are using an app that you require it for.

Yeah, I've already got my refund.

Here’s a thoughtful reply to that concern:

Hey there! 👋

Yes, that's actually how Surfshark's kill switch is designed to function. It's a "strict" kill switch, meaning it blocks all internet traffic whenever the VPN is not connected—whether it's due to a disconnection or you manually turning it off. The idea is to prevent any traffic from being exposed outside the secure VPN tunnel.

I totally get why this might not suit your use case, though! Other VPNs with a more flexible kill switch only activate it in the event of an unexpected connection drop, rather than blocking internet access entirely when manually disconnected.

If this is a dealbreaker for you, one workaround could be disabling the kill switch entirely when you don’t need it, but I know that kind of defeats its purpose in certain scenarios.

Alternatively, if this doesn’t align with your needs, you might want to explore VPNs like ExpressVPN or NordVPN, which offer less strict kill switch configurations.

Hope that clears things up a bit! Let me know if you want recommendations or help tweaking settings. 🚀

I'd advise you to unlike all those iptv requests before an administrator sees them, also don't post anything in that thread unless it is a request FOR iptv and also, read the rules

Also, while my gob's open, you'll need to remove your advert from your profile
