Hi guys i have a 58 plate mondeo titanium x i have had the air con re gassed it worked fine for about 2 hours and now its cold the garage have told me it cant have a leak as they checked it but didn't put any dye in, they have said something about the air compressor not working

Any ideas please

Was the aircon working before the re gas?
why did you have it re gassed?
have the aircon system "gassed" again by someone else if necessary.
have the system properly leak checked.

I had a 2002 Passat that needed to be re gassed every 3 months, it had a very small leak under certain circumstances, but I could not be bothered to get it fixed.

The compressor will not work if there is insufficient gas pressure in the system. without having the system properly tested you will never know where to start fault finding. I have seen many cars pass a vacuum leak test during the re gas process, you should enquire as to how much gas was actually added to your system during the re gas process,. the way these machines work is, they first remove all the gas, vacuum test, then add the correct amount of gas.

So if your system was empty and passed a leak test, they would have to use (example) 300g of gas, if your system was low they would remove (example) 180g gas, vacuum test, then refill with 180g of old gas, and 120g of new gas.



That probably is as clear as mud, as I've just finished an 18hr shift, but hope you can make sense of what im trying to explain.
 
Usually, with the car running if you turn on the a/c you'll notice a change in rpm... if the rpm doesn't change, this indicated the a/c pump isn't kicking in usually due to insufficient pressure ... I'd take it to a proper a/c specialist and not any old garage - especially the bodgers at Kwik Fit!
 
I have a MK11 mondoe ghia 2.2tdci and had a problem with the air con and initially Ford quoted quite a high figure, well a very high figure, but I did some research and went to a few places. Along the way I learned that these units have a self diagnostic tool and for yours its this. Do the following with ignition on.

"At the climate control assembly, PRESS the "OFF" and "FOOTWELL" buttons simultaneously for exactly 2 seconds, then PRESS "AUTO" within 1.5 seconds. The on-board diagnosis which then starts lasts a few seconds. An animated display appears in the display of the climate control assembly during this time. Any faults found are displayed on both displays of the climate control assembly in the form of trouble codes.

Example: Left-hand display shows "90", right-hand display shows "B3", i.e. the trouble code read out is 90B3 = short in circuit for right-hand centre vents air outlet temperature sensor (short to ground)."

The mk4 air con is far more complex than the MK11 and an error code can stop it working. Give it a go and see what codes it throws up. There are a lot of things that can scupper air con, relays, fuses, broken fan, sensors, loose wire, wires corroding, leaks, and do on. I ended up going to a small service guy who was able to track it down to compressor not switching on but he could not find the reason. Ford have diagnostics but will charge. In the end I got ford to examine wiring and sensors, a loose wire in conector was the fault. It took them over an hour but bill was a lot less than original.

not being familiar with your models (im in canada),what year is this car and who is the maker.as was said,if there is not sufficient pressure the compressor will not engage.what are your running pressure readings both low and high side?
 
i recently bought a 2010 vw golf 1.6 tdi, whilst driving home the ac was working fine after a few days it stopped working , there was no cold air. I took it to a local ac regassing centre who refilled the the sytem, added some oil and some dye. whilst it was filling up with gas, the technician said ac should last for ever , because it basically works like a fridge, constanly recirculating the coolant, most of the times it more likely to be a leak or a faulty component such as a relay or something. Anyway its working at the moment second day, time will tell if it runs out in a few days or a few week, if thats the case then ive probably got a leak or some component is not working.
 
same thing happened me and i used a sealing agent with a partially filled system to suck it in and then topped up with gas,over a month ago and still cold.
 
what sealant did yo use ? how do you add the sealant ? or does the ac technician do it?..my ac so far is working its been about 4 or 5 days, im sure it would have leaked out by now if there was a leak unless it is very tiny leak or leaks when ac is on..got me thinking now..lol
 
dunno if you have it over there but i use redtek.they have a kit that includes the guage and refrigerant.keep in mind that these aftermarket ac products are usually butane ore propane based and are extremely flammible.be very careful adding oil to your system.to much or too fast and you can wreck a compressor just like that.its best if you can suck the system down prior to charging.this is another good indicator of leaks.it should go down to about 25in of vacuum and hold.if not you have a leak.i just use a small portable air compressor to evacuate the system.made an adapter hose that i hook to the air intake.works like a charm.
 
go and get a nitrogen leak test done, ac machines are not really the best for detecting pin holes in condensors. nitrogen leak test is much better as you can apply how much pressure you want too put into the system :)
