Ability to record programs?

Hey guys, I joined this place around when E2 boxes were all the rage and saw all the sky channels go dark which made me switch to IPTV.

I'm more than happy with this but my 74 year old mother wants a setup whereby she can record programs like we used to be able to on the zgemma type boxes. I've tried telling her that this is becoming outdated and catch up is the way to go now but she still wants her own little private library of programs to watch.

I've asked similar on here before regarding IPTV and I know that it's not reliable but are there any other options, legit or not that she could look into?

She used to have VM but I got her to ditch that when I found out they were robbing her of nearly £120 a month for a fairly basic TV package, one of their slower fibre offerings and a telephone line. Sky isn't an option as she cannot have a dish fitted due to tall buildings in a direct line of sight where the dish would need to point and she has tried BTTV which has been nothing short of a nightmare. The new sky services are not recordable anyway so they are still out.

She watches mainly documentary channels such as discovery, crime programs, paranormal etc

I've told her a good IPTV provider should have a selection of catch up channels but she insists she wants to record them so she knows she can find them at a later date

Is she asking the impossible these days or are there any decent services she could look at?

I record Iptv all the time using my E2 box works well most of the time.

Not an E2 box or recording but have you considered Discovery+ on a firestick?
I think it's pretty good at £3.99 per month and chock full of documentaries and paranormal stuff.

Stream our on-demand catalogue, plus the following live channels: Animal Planet, Discovery, Discovery History, Discovery Science, DMAX, Food Network, HGTV, ID, Quest, Quest Red, TLC, and Turbo.

If you have the sat dish and E2 box with twin feeds you can get all the BBCs and ITVs and others on freesat.
My boxes are always recording something.

What about Freeview via an Aerial ?

I've actually tried with an E2 box, got too many failed recordings.

This is actually something I've mentioned to her and she may be considering it. I need to convince her that it's at least worth a trial run.

Sat dish isn't an option because of the multi storey flats built opposite her house, it's the only direct line of sight to the satellite position.
Freeview doesn't carry enough of the type of channels she wants unfortunately.

Out of interest, what E2 box do you use for IPTV? My old zgemma star 2s was way too slow and sluggish. I might get an up to date box and try it myself.

I use a nvidia shield and a fire cube for my IPTV but freesat as well would be nice

The zgemma 2s is no good for iptv to slow, i use an octagon sf8008

Need a multiroom sub and setup the plugin correctly. I run 3 different services on my box and record on 2 of them.

Yeah I have 5 different subs at the minute, I understand the need for multiroom when recording. I know the 2s is too slow, it was becoming laggy at the end of the CS era so with the advancements now I can't see it working at all.

My old box is somewhere down the shed anyway, probably in bits (I like to meddle with stuff!)

Just checked the octagon out, looks a decent bit of kit but only 1gb ram, is that enough for multitasking stuff like recording and watching etc?

The biggest issue I find is reliability. You could buy a more powerful E2 box but it wouldn't guarantee better IPTV recording.
E2's record tuner inputs well but IPTV can be a slight issue and works 'most of the time', subject to player settings. Catchup comes in useful when the record has let you down
I find its best to leave all IPTV connections alone when you have something recording.
