If anyone is thinking about buying a Firestick or Cube - then you should maybe hold out for the Prime Day event on July 16th and 17th
NOTE - you MUST have Amazon Prime on your account to be eligible for this.

Current 4K Firestick =£60
I bought a Firestick for my folks on sale = £35

I also bought the USB adapter to power firestick from TV directly. Unfortunately this wasn't reduced in sale = £20

hey mate sorry. why did you need to buy a USB adapter to power the fire stick?
I thought it came with the plug?

There is a socket plug with the firestick, however, for convenience you can power the firestick directly from the TV using the device and plugging it into the TV USB port. That means you don’t need to run a power cable from the firestick to a wall socket. Can be useful when there isn’t a spare wall socket or extension close to TV.

I'm confused, Ive always just plugged mine straight into the TV with USB? without that? is that not supposed to work haha?

How a firestick works
  • Firestick plugs into HDMI port - provides audio and video
  • Firestick requires a power source to work....
    • Power it directly from AC Power socket
    • Power it from TV directly with USB adaptor device

It works. However, it will likely not be running at 100% full power. Do you ever get the warning that you should connect it to a normal plug? I do on mine.

Try connecting it to the plug that came with it, you may get a performance boost.

Would avoid any fire devices after they've locked down changing launchers and plan on going away from android all together in the future. It's just so bloated with ads that it's not worth it.

Amazon reportedly plans to ditch Android for homegrown Fire OS
I use a Formuler device. I just bought the Firestick to run Stremio for my parents. It's cheap and does the trick for them. I need something reliable for them, otherwise they are on the phone to me telling me something isn't working. Plenty of people on this forum seem to use Firesticks for IPTV. They are cheap and do the job.

I suppose you are right, guess I'm just mad they took away the ability to change the launcher. The hardware is excellent value for money but the software leaves a lot to be desired. Chromecasts and Onn boxes are good cheap alternatives for around the same price.

occasional on start up but that's it, man wonder if that's why its unbelievable slow now and again

When you say change the launcher? what exactly do you mean?

When I mean changing the launcher I mean replacing the stock fire launcher with a custom one like Projectivy, Flauncher or Leanback launcher. Attached a few images to give you an idea how it looks on each of them.

Amazon blocks custom Home Launchers with latest Fire TV software update

That's when the started banning it, they likely sell the device itself at a loss and make money with ads and mining data. I still have a few fire stick 4k maxes (Gen 1) that I was able to debloat completely but its much harder now and the workaround isn't at a system level. This is why I recommend avoiding fire devices altogether but understand some people have no choice.

See i do like the fire sticks, i mean they are cheap and they do run poor sometimes, but i don't think i care as i RARLEY even use tv but i can understand why people who do would go for the alternatives for sure, the storage is kinda baked haha

Well i heard rumors going round that they were going to stop that not 100% sure how accurate that is or if it's just good old scare monger tactics?
